What is ISO 9001?

ISO 9001:2015 is the world's leading international standard for Quality Management Systems (QMS). Published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), it provides a proven framework for consistently delivering products and services that meet customer, statutory and regulatory requirements whilst driving continual improvement throughout an organisation.

More than one million organisations worldwide have adopted ISO 9001 to improve operational efficiency, strengthen customer confidence and demonstrate a commitment to quality.

Certification is recognised globally and is often a prerequisite for winning contracts, entering supply chains and tendering for work in both the public and private sectors.

ISO 9001: 2015 Clauses

Clauses 1–3: Introduction

These clauses define the scope of the standard, normative references and terminology.

Clause 4 – Context of the Organisation

Organisations must understand their internal and external issues, identify interested parties, determine the scope of their Quality Management System and establish documented processes.

Clause 5 – Leadership

Top management must demonstrate leadership, establish a Quality Policy, assign responsibilities and promote customer focus throughout the organisation.

Clause 6 – Planning

Organisations identify risks and opportunities, establish quality objectives and plan changes to ensure continual improvement.

Clause 7 – Support

This clause covers resources, competence, awareness, communication, infrastructure, organisational knowledge and documented information required to operate an effective QMS.

Clause 8 – Operation

The operational clause focuses on planning and controlling products and services, customer communication, design and development, purchasing, production, service delivery and control of nonconforming outputs.

Clause 9 – Performance Evaluation

Organisations monitor performance through internal audits, customer satisfaction, management review meetings, measurement and analysis.

Clause 10 – Improvement

The final clause requires organisations to address nonconformities, implement corrective actions and continually improve the effectiveness of the Quality Management System.

Consultant Pro Tip

Map the organisation’s real processes from customer enquiry through to delivery, invoicing and aftercare. Identify where things can go wrong, what controls already exist, who owns each process, and what evidence demonstrates that it is working.
